💡 Common App Strategy

Use Common App for all four schools. UF requires it; FSU strongly prefers it; UCF recommends it; USF accepts it. Write the best version of every essay (personal statement + all supplementals) — UCF has 3 optional 250w essays that all strong applicants should complete.

In addition to Common App, complete the separate self-reporting portals: STARS for UF and FSU, and SPARK for UCF. These are required steps beyond submitting the Common App.

FSU also requests a resume upload — build a clean, one-page academic resume with AP courses, honors, activities, and tennis achievements.

Essays & Writing Strategy

For students in the lower SAT range, essays are the #1 lever. Start now.

✍️ Common App Personal Statement (650 words)

The personal statement is the most important piece of writing she will submit. It shows admissions officers who she is beyond grades and scores.

🎾 Tennis Angle
Competing at the state level while maintaining 4.54 GPA. What does mental toughness on the court teach you? How has tennis shaped your identity?
🔬 Research/Inquiry Angle
AP Seminar + upcoming AP Research. What question drives your curiosity? What problem are you passionate about solving?
⚙️ Identity/Engineering Angle
Engineering Club + STEM courses + Capstone. When did you first fall in love with building, designing, or solving a hard problem?
🏛 UF Supplemental
Essay TypeShort essay — 250 words
FocusWhy UF? Why this major? Specific programs.
Research UF-specific programs, research labs, or faculty in your intended major. Name them specifically. Generic "I want to go to UF because it's a great school" answers will hurt more than help.
🏛 UCF Supplemental (3 essays)
Essay 1Why UCF? (250w)
Essay 2Why this major? (250w)
Essay 3One extracurricular — its impact (250w)
WRITE ALL THREE. UCF says "optional" but strong applicants who skip them are at a disadvantage. Essay 3 is perfect for her tennis narrative.
📅 Essay Writing Schedule
June 2026
Brainstorm 5–10 essay topic ideas. Free-write for 30 min on each. Choose 1–2 strongest.
July 2026
Write first full draft of personal statement. Don't edit yet — just get it out.
August 2026
Revise personal statement. Begin all supplemental essays. Get feedback from English teacher or trusted adult.
September 2026
Final polish on all essays. Submit FSU and UCF by Oct 15. No changes after submission.
