Q&A Guide · School Research
Should she consider other universities?
Her current list of 4 Florida schools is solid. Here's an honest look at additional options — and whether adding any of them makes sense.
First: Why the Current List Works Well
Before exploring other schools, it's worth noting that her current four-school list (UF, FSU, UCF, USF) is actually well-constructed: one competitive reach (UF), two strong matches (FSU, UCF), and one strong safety (USF). Bright Futures covering 100% of tuition at any of these makes the financial case for FL public schools very compelling. Adding schools outside Florida often means losing Bright Futures coverage and taking on tuition costs that could be avoided.
That said, there are scenarios where additional schools make sense: if her SAT improves significantly, if she has a specific major that one school excels at, or if she simply wants to explore options beyond the FL public system.
The key question before adding any school: "What does this school offer that my current four don't — and is that worth the additional application effort and potential cost?" If the answer is clear, add it. If it's vague, don't.
Florida Private Options
University of Miami
📍 Coral Gables, FL · Private · Top 50 National
Acceptance Rate~19% — more selective than UF
SAT Middle 50%1,390–1,530 — she's in range at 1,420+
GPA Middle 50%4.1–4.6 unweighted equivalent
Bright FuturesDoes NOT apply — private school
Tuition (2025)~$62,000+/year before aid
Merit AidUniversity Scholars (full ride) + Stamps Scholarship — very competitive
Best ForBusiness, pre-med, marine science, communications
⚖️ Consider only if: She receives significant merit aid, or she is strongly attracted to the UM environment. Without substantial scholarships, cost vs. UF/FSU quality gap is hard to justify.
Florida Institute of Technology (Florida Tech)
📍 Melbourne, FL · Private · Engineering Focus
Acceptance Rate~54%
SAT Middle 50%1,120–1,350 — she's above the top
FocusEngineering, aeronautics, science, computing
Bright FuturesDoes NOT apply
Merit AidStrong Presidential Scholarships for her profile
ProsTight-knit, STEM-focused, NASA/aerospace industry connections
⚖️ Consider only if: She is strongly interested in engineering or aerospace specifically. Her profile would likely earn significant merit aid here, potentially making costs competitive. Not recommended as a primary option — UCF and UF have stronger general STEM reputations.
Specialized Options
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
📍 Daytona Beach, FL · Private · Aviation/Aerospace
Acceptance Rate~63%
SAT Middle 50%1,130–1,340 — she's above
SpecialtyAviation, aerospace engineering, aeronautics — world-class
Bright FuturesDoes NOT apply
Who it's forStudents specifically interested in aviation, aerospace, or related fields
🔴 Skip unless: She has a specific passion for aviation or aerospace engineering. Not worth the cost premium over UF/FSU/UCF without that focus.
Additional Florida Public Options
Florida Atlantic University (FAU)
📍 Boca Raton, FL · Public · Bright Futures applies
Profile FitShe is well above FAU's profile
Bright FuturesApplies — 100% tuition covered
Distance~4.5 hours from Tarpon Springs
🔴 Likely skip: USF Tampa already serves as her safety and is much closer to home. FAU adds nothing her current list doesn't already cover, and USF is a stronger school.
Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU)
📍 Fort Myers, FL · Public · Bright Futures applies
Profile FitFar above FGCU's profile
Bright FuturesApplies
ProsSmaller, coastal campus with growing programs
🔴 Skip: Not needed given current list. USF already covers the safety role better with stronger academics and closer proximity.
Our Recommendation
Keep the current list of 4 as the primary focus
The four-school list (UF, FSU, UCF, USF) is genuinely well-balanced. Bright Futures covers 100% of tuition at all four — that's an enormous financial advantage over any private school option. The application effort for more schools should only be added if there's a clear, specific reason.
The one school worth considering adding
University of Miami is the only school on this list worth potentially adding, under one condition: she should research UM's scholarship programs (Stamps Scholarship, University Scholars) and determine whether her profile makes her a serious candidate. If so, applying is worth the effort. If not, the cost difference without substantial aid makes it hard to justify.
What to do right now
Focus 90% of effort on the four current schools. Master those applications before considering additions. The FSU/UCF deadline of October 15 is only 4 months away — depth beats breadth in this process.
